About the course

Join me for a 6 week introductory course in character design and illustration for children’s books!

During this course you will learn the process of creating an illustration from a classic children’s story.
I will guide you through creating the world and characters for your illustrations, and advise you on technique and execution.

This course is for adults and people 16 years and older, at any level of drawing ability. Children over 10 may join the course with adult supervision.

We will start on Tuesday the 27th of October 2020 from 6-8 pm and will run for 6 weeks each Tuesday evening.

Classes will be held at 41 Glen Road, Raumati South, in the former Raumati South Blowing Club.

The course cost is $150 for 6 weeks.

Drawing materials required:

I will supply some materials and paper, however to get the most out of the course I would recommend that you bring:

  • A3 drawing pad

  • 2B and HB pencils

  • Eraser

  • Coloured pencils (if you have them)

Course Outline

The course schedule is as follows:

Week 1

  • Introduction to children’s book illustration

  • Choosing a story

  • Creating a mood board 

Week 2

  • Character design

  • Developing a ‘style’

Week 3

  • Drafting your illustrations

  • Principles of composition 

Week 4

  • Introducing colour

  • Finalising your sketches

Week 5

  • Completing your illustrations

Week 6

  • Completing and reviewing the illustrations

One-on-One tutoring

I am offering one on one tutoring in weekly hour long sessions. These sessions include tutoring in digital illustration (no special materials required).
These sessions are $40 an hour on a pay as you go basis.
I would recommend this tutoring if you are interested in learning digital illustration, or if you have a specific project in mind that you would like to work on.
